Ebony Studs · Black Tourmaline, October's Birthstone
Ebony is a type of tree and the word Ebony is often used to describe a beautiful deep black color. These rods of Tourmaline make me think of gorgeous tree trunks in that rich deep black color. Each pair of earrings is handmade using raw, natural crystals. The beauty of this is that every pair will turn out perfectly unique. Some are of the earrings are thicker or thinner, some or longer or shorter. Some of the metal is more texturized, some of the metal is smoother. Some have lines across the metal that remind me of the rings in a tree trunk, and the texture throughout the metal reminds me of the texturize of bark on a tree. If you have preferences on the size/shape, you can leave a note of that during checkout. These authentic Tourmaline crystals are set on solid sterling silver earring posts. All Little Sycamore jewelry is lead & nickel free.
The process: So many stones are searched through, hand-selecting the ones that will be prettiest for these earrings. Each stone is set with the prettiest side facing outward. The back and edges of the stones are carefully painted with conductive paint. Using an electric current, the silver earrings are done in solid silver. For the rose gold, pure copper deposits onto the base of the stones for 12+ hours, and I check and rotate things every few hours to keep things depositing evenly. This slow build up of metal creates a unique and organic looking setting that very securely holds the stones in place. The earrings are tumbled, hand-polished, and the setting around the stones is plated in the thickest possible plating of rose gold (or left as is in silver if done in solid silver). Long story short... a whole lot of time and love is put into these little beauties!
